Onze meisjes zijn nog niet leerplichtig. Lieve is 2 en Vlinder is 4. In Nederland ga je naar school als je 4 bent, en ben je leerplichtig als je 5 bent. Hier ga je naar school als je voor 1 september 5 bent geworden. Als je na 1 september 5 wordt, dan kun je je kindje laten testen en een aanvraag doen voor vervroegde toelating OF een studiejaar wachten. Vlinder wordt 5 op 2 september…inderdaad ja, twee dagen te laat. Ik heb nog aangegeven dat mijn weeën wel op 31 augustus zijn begonnen. Maar dat telt helaas niet. Ze moet dus getest worden of we moeten een jaar wachten. Ik zie eigenlijk allebei niet echt zitten. Maar haar een jaar langer thuis houden vonden we toch de slechtste optie. Omdat wij op dit moment geen auto hebben (deze is total loss gereden door een onoplettende Amerikaan …. serieus ik reed niet eens) en ik het niet zie zitten om met extreme hitte drie uur per dag op de fiets te zitten om de meisjes naar school te brengen en weer op te halen, hebben wij ervoor gekozen om hen per 1 mei 2018 homeschooling te geven en Vlinder zo klaar te stomen voor de test.
Homeschooling in Nederland en Amerika… gewoon even wat weetjes
In Nederland kun je met thuisonderwijs niet voldoen aan de voorwaarden van de leerplicht, tenzij je hiertoe een vrijstelling aanvraagt. Dat kan bijvoorbeeld op basis van levensovertuiging. Volgens het NOS-nieuwsbericht ‘Zorgen over opmars thuisonderwijs‘, zouden in studiejaar 2013-2014 ongeveer 575 kinderen een dergelijke vrijstelling hebben gekregen. Heel grof geschat is dit 0,03% van de leerplichtige kinderen in Nederland. In Amerika is homeschooling wel legaal. Je moet echter wel, afhankelijk van de staat waarin je woont, voldoen aan bepaalde voorwaarden. Arizona wordt gezien als homeschool-vriendelijke staat bijvoorbeeld omdat de staat geen eisen stelt aan de wijze waarop les wordt gegeven en de docent geen lesbevoegdheid hoeft te hebben. Wel moet je als ouder doorgeven aan de regionale ‘School Superintendent’ (ik denk dat dit een soort opperhoofd / eindbaas is van het regionale onderwijs) dat je homeschooling wilt geven. Volgens het rapport van het ‘National Center for Education Statistics’ zou in 2012 bij benadering 3,4% van de Amerikaanse kinderen tussen 5 en 17 jaar thuis onderwezen worden. Redenen die hiervoor worden aangeven zijn onder anderen de negatieve schoolomgeving, kwaliteit van onderwijs, het geven van ondersteuning aan extra behoeftes van een kind en geloofsovertuiging. De resultaten lijken goed. In het artikel ‘de effectiviteit van thuisonderwijs: een overzicht van onderzoeksresultaten‘ worden verschillende studies met elkaar vergeleken. De conclusie is dat vrijwel alle onderzoeken positieve uitkomsten laten zien op zowel sociaal als cognitief vlak. Het probleem is echter dat het erg moeilijk is om een goed vergelijk te maken onder anderen omdat mensen die homeschooling aanbieden naar alle waarschijnlijkheid geen goede afspiegeling zijn van de totale bevolking. Maar gelukkig hoeven wij ons hier dus nog niet zoveel zorgen over te maken.
Lesmateriaal
Als je thuis onderwijs geeft, moet je natuurlijk lesmateriaal hebben. En omdat in Amerika homeschooling heel geaccepteerd is, zijn er allerlei toffe websites en curriculum kits te verkrijgen. Ze hebben hier zelfs online programma’s voor homeschooling. Ik heb best een tijdje moeten zoeken omdat veel lesmateriaal een religieuze inslag heeft. Uiteraard hebben wij alle respect voor gelovige mensen, maar wij willen onze kinderen heel graag leren over maar niet vanuit geloofsovertuiging. Hoe dan ook heb ik iets gevonden. Het heet Timberdoodle en het is geweldig! Eigenlijk koop je gewoon een groot pakket werkboeken en speelgoed met precies de juiste hoeveel aandacht voor alle relevante ontwikkelingsgebieden en afgestemd op het niveau van je kind. Er zitten ook een aantal prachtige handleidingen bij die je helpen om het speelgoed te gebruiken om de ontwikkeling van je kind te stimuleren. Wij hebben twee pakketten gekocht: 1 voor Lieve en 1 voor Vlinder. En zie hier het resultaat… een hele kast vol 🙂
En hoe gaat het??
Inmiddels ben ik nu een maandje onderweg om de dagen dat ze thuis zijn te vullen met homeschooling. In het begin vond ik het ontzettend zoeken omdat ze alles ter discussie stelden. Daarnaast had / heeft Lieve een concentratieboog van ongeveer 1 tel en dat helpt ook niet. Natuurlijk heb ik nu nog steeds strijd, ik heb nou eenmaal kinderen met een sterke eigen wil en mening (hebben ze niet van mij ;)). Maar het gaat echt heel veel beter en we doen leuke dingen. Zoals op de foto hieronder hebben ze tabletten van de drie primaire kleuren (rood, geel en blauw) opgelost in water en daarna moesten ze het met de pipet in een ander bakje mengen zodat ze secundaire kleuren kregen (oranje, paars en groen).
Ook heb ik bijvoorbeeld een stukje voorgelezen over verschillende insecten en zijn we daarna buiten naar beestjes gaan zoeken om ze met een vergrootglas te kunnen bekijken.
Maar ze zijn ook aan het werk in werkboeken, we spelen spelletjes (zoals letterbingo), we bouwen met verschillende materialen patronen na en nog veel meer. In het pakket mis ik wel fysieke beweging en sociale interactie met kinderen buiten ons gezin. Dus dat probeer ik er zelf in te brengen door play dates te organiseren met kindjes van school of mensen die we hier hebben ontmoet. Voor de nodige fysieke beweging laat ik ze iedere dag minimaal een uur bewegen door met hen naar de speeltuin, zwembad of splash path te gaan. Maar ze gaan ook naar balletles en Floris gaat vaak nog fietsen of steppen met ze.
De meisjes vinden het geweldig en genieten er echt van! Maar ik leer er zelf ook van. Niet alleen over bepaalde thema’s (zoals dieren, scheikundige proefjes etc) waar ik nog weinig vanaf wist. Maar ook over hoe je moet loslaten… heeeel belangrijk en niet echt één van mijn talenten. Daarnaast leer ik ontzettend veel over de ontwikkelingen van mijn kinderen en ben ik hierbij veel meer betrokken dan eerder. In Nederland zou ik dit nooit overwogen hebben en zou ik hebben gedacht: doe even normaal. Maar zo zie je maar: een nieuwe omgeving laat ook weer nieuwe mogelijkheden zien en dit had ik voor geen goud willen missen.
